Steps to Your Hernia Repair Surgery

Are you already on Crete?

1 Meeting your surgeon

Schedule a consultation appointment
It's uncomplicated and without any waiting lists. You will find all contact details below. We will coordinate the best times with you.

Bring previous medical tests and reports with you
You are advised to bring any relevant preliminary tests and medical reports with you (if you have any). You may also send them to us prior to your appointment per email.

Surgical consultation
During the consultation, your surgeon will first ask you about your current signs and symptoms and he will then physically examine you to determine if you have a hernia or not. After the physical examination, an ultrasound test is usually performed by the surgeon himself. In addition, your surgeon will take notes about your past medical history, medication, comorbidities, previous operations, allergies etc.

Patient education
You will then have a conversation about the surgery planned. The surgeon will explain to you why a surgical procedure is recommended and if a non-surgical treatment would be an option. The surgical procedure and the postoperative management will be discussed in detail, as well as any potential risks.

During the consultation, you will be able to ask your surgeon anything you have in mind about your condition and the treatment planned. We attach great importance to a sufficent patient education before surgery, as we strongly believe, it is directly reflected in the surgical result.

2 Preparing for surgery

We set a date and time for your surgery
according to the surgeon's instructions and your own preferences.

We can contact your medical insurance
With your permission, we can contact your medical insurance company and send them a first medical report and a cost estimation about your planned surgery.

Depending on your contract, they usually send us back a guarantee of payment. In this case the payment is settled directly between insurance and hospital and you do not have to pay anything for your medical treatment.

Preoperative evaluation and preparation
An appropriate preoperative medical assessment is always of great importance. After your surgical consultation, further examinations may be required before surgery: e.g. ECG, cardiological evaluation, x-rays, laboratory tests etc.

Anesthesiological consultation
Before surgery, an anesthesiologist will examine you. After evaluating all previous results, he will inform you about the anesthesia and the postoperative pain management planned for the surgical procedure. During the consultation, you will be able to discuss with your anesthesiologist everything in detail.

3 Hernia Repair Surgery

We assist you all along
After your admission on the day scheduled for your surgery, we follow some standard procedures to facilitate your way to the operating room. Your medical team and the nursing staff will be there to assist you at any time.

Enhanced recovery
We offer an enhanced recovery programme after surgery to all our patients. This includes personalized pain management, early mobilization and return to a normal diet, as soon as possible.

Ambulatory surgery - Outpatient surgery
Many procedures in hernia repair are performed as an ambulatory or outpatient surgery, that does not require an overnight hospital stay. Your medical team determines, if your procedure can be carried out as an ambulatory surgery. In this case, you may go home on the same day of surgery, as you feel minimal or no discomfort at all and there is no medical reason for you to stay in hospital overnight.

Inpatient surgical treatment
Depending on the surgical procedure and your physiology an inpatient treatment may be necessary after your surgery.

4 Follow up after surgery

Follow the doctor's instructions
Before leaving the hospital to return home, your surgeon will discuss the procedure with you and he will give you instructions for the immediate care you need after your surgery.

Postoperative surgical consultations
In the time following your surgical procedure surgical consultations are usually necessary. During these meetings your surgeon will be able to examine you to evaluate the healing process.

Complete medical record
Once your treatment is complete you will receive a detailed medical report in English.
